Most of us know that the conventional fashion industry isn't exactly known for being sustainable and fair in its treatment of us and our resources. So the question is, how can we change that? Leonie and Christa from Claim Design have their own answer and, with their custom-designed bandana, demonstrate how to raise awareness about a sustainable fashion industry. Find out more in the interview.
We at Claim Design are Christa and Leonie, two young women who met while studying media studies in Potsdam. We share a common interest in the environment, sustainability, and fairness in our society. We also both wanted to create something ourselves and therefore decided to pursue our interests in a joint project. Claim Design is thus an attempt to contribute to the fair fashion movement with our own skills and knowledge.
We want to use the power of the community on social media to spread our message and our cause, but also to encourage people to voice their own demands more boldly. With the hashtag #whatisyourclaim, we not only want to express our own claim, but also encourage others to take a stand. However, we don't want to dictate what that claim should be. Whether serious or humorous, there are no limits to personal demands.
The bandana is a versatile accessory and can be integrated into any wardrobe in the most sustainable way. It can be worn by people of all sizes, ages, and genders. We chose bandanas because they are simple and timeless. While searching for a fair and sustainable production facility, we came across Mehera Shaw and were immediately captivated by their traditional hand-block printing technique. The Claim Paradise Bandana is lovingly handcrafted in India under fair conditions, and the cotton used is GOTS-certified.
Our styling tips for the bandana: Whether in the hair, around the neck or as a bow on the bag, the bandana adds the finishing touch to every summer/festival/holiday look and our personal favorite is the combination with a light vintage denim shirt.
4. In your "Get informed" section, you've compiled a wealth of great information that offers a wide range of insights into the sustainable fashion industry. Why is this so important to you? Do you believe there's still too little information available on how to transition to more ethical fashion?
We firmly believe that better decisions can be made when people are informed. There are already some good resources available in the fair fashion sector, but we think it can't hurt to raise awareness in even more places about the need for change in the fashion world. We've tried to compile all the key findings we discovered during our research into several categories. The goal isn't to create a comprehensive source of information on this very complex topic, but rather to touch upon various aspects and provide a nudge in the right direction.
5. In your opinion, what needs to change in the fashion industry so that more people buy fair fashion?
We believe that not only do consumers play a crucial role in their purchasing decisions, but companies, especially the large, global players, must also shift their values towards greater fairness and sustainability. Currently, for example, the price difference between fair fashion and fast fashion is still too significant for the general public to switch to fair fashion. We are delighted to observe the current developments in the fair fashion industry, but for truly noticeable change, there needs to be a greater awareness of the impact of fast fashion consumption on society and fundamental (including legal) changes within the fashion industry.
