When handcrafted jewelry tells stories – Oh Bracelet Berlin

We often associate jewelry with certain emotions and memories, which are especially lasting when we receive it as a gift from a loved one. In the interview I conducted with Marie Galinsky-Schild, founder of the jewelry label "Oh Bracelet Berlin," you'll learn why this aspect is so important to her and what role sustainability plays in her brand.

1. Marie, Oh Bracelet Berlin isn't just a jewelry label. What's special about your products?

I love jewelry and was always on the lookout for the perfect bracelets. Through my own search and that of my friends, I discovered that delicate, high-quality fashion jewelry is really hard to find. That's how the idea came about to start my own label and offer "light luxury" products at affordable prices with a personal touch.

2. You've taken a pretty bold step and plunged into the adventure of self-employment. Why did you decide to start your own jewelry label?

I've never had a permanent job and consistently live by the motto "Work is not a job". I became self-employed 10 years ago during my photography apprenticeship, so starting my own business and taking the next step felt like the right thing to do.
As a child, I often went to my mom's "gift idea" shop after school to help out a bit, admire all the special little things, and watch the customers shopping and searching for a gift for a loved one. My passion for jewelry and the topic of "gift-giving" led to the birth of my label, Oh Bracelet Berlin, in 2015.
My idea was to offer a high-quality piece of jewelry combined with a personal message, and that's how the story began.
Because giving is more beautiful than receiving, with Oh Bracelet Berlin I primarily want to create happy moments and develop products that bring joy to others.

In all my designs, it's very important to me that they are not only beautiful to look at, but also have the potential to tell the story of their wearer. Because a piece of jewelry is always most valuable when we connect emotions and memories with it (Marie Galinsky-Schild).

3. How and where are your products manufactured?

The beauty of our jewelry is not the only thing that matters to us. We act sustainably and with social responsibility at every stage of production. For this reason, as a sustainable label, we source a large portion of our materials from German manufacturers.

When selecting raw materials, the highest quality, durable materials, and freedom from harmful substances are paramount. Furthermore, production takes place entirely by hand in Germany: either in their own Berlin studio, in a jewelry foundry in Pforzheim, Baden-Württemberg, or in Riesa, Saxony, with a trained goldsmith (Marie Galinsky-Schild).

We do not have precarious employment conditions. Our employees have permanent contracts, fair wages above the minimum wage, and are covered by social security.

4. How important is sustainability to you as a jewelry label? What materials do you primarily work with?

For us, sustainability goes hand in hand with high quality standards. Anything our customers can enjoy for a long time doesn't need to be constantly replaced, saving them money and conserving resources. We primarily work with gold-plated stainless steel and 925 sterling silver. In addition, we began working with recycled silver in 2017. The first jewelry components and products in our current collection are now made from this material. The transition is laborious and expensive, and it remains to be seen whether our customers are ready to embark on this new path with us.

5. One last question: Is there anything you should be aware of when caring for your jewelry?

There isn't much to consider, but proper care can significantly extend the lifespan of our jewelry.
It's advisable to gently clean it at regular intervals. All you really need is lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth. Otherwise, the less you shower or exercise while wearing our jewelry, the longer you'll be able to enjoy it.
