Another cold before Christmas

It's getting colder and wetter outside. The next cold is practically just around the corner. We have tips for the cold season!

Sniffling on the subway, coughing on the bus. Without the warmth of the sun, you feel pretty wiped out, don't you? The next cold is just around the corner – BUT NOT WITH US.
We at Mit Ecken und Kanten (With Corners and Edges) have delved into medical literature to find out the best way to protect yourself from a nasty cold (or even the flu!). Since the start of the pandemic, we've all been expertly trained to sneeze into our elbows and disinfect surfaces hourly to prevent infection. We don't need to tell you that, do we?
But do you also know which foods boost your immune system, which home remedies will get you back on track against a nasty cold, and which entertainment program will banish boredom?
Here are our tips for the cold season.

When life gives you lemons...

Vitamin C is incredibly important for the immune system, and lemons are known to be packed with it. Mix lukewarm water with lemon juice and voilà, you've got a simple cold remedy that you can drink in large quantities. Drinking plenty of fluids helps!

Hey, it's me, Ginger!

For those who prefer to boost their immune system with a good, strong drink, ginger is the perfect choice. The root is a true wonder weapon in the fight against viruses and physical ailments, as it is antibacterial and antiviral. Like lemon, all of its beneficial properties are quite sensitive to heat, so the water shouldn't be too hot when you're making ginger tea.

There are tons of recipes for ginger shots online , but the basic version consists of just 100g of fresh ginger, three lemons, and a sweetener of your choice (agave syrup, coconut blossom syrup, or even honey). Squeeze the juice from the lemons, peel the ginger, and put both in a blender with the syrup to puree (30 seconds should be enough). If the juice is still too thick, you can thin it with a little water and strain it using a kitchen sieve or a nut milk bag. It will keep in the refrigerator for five to six days. From this base, you can now get really creative and throw other fruits into the blender, such as oranges and apples.
We can also highly recommend the immune boosters from kruut . Both taste fantastic, of course, and have already helped to revive one or two of our colleagues.
That spiciness is good for preventing colds is evident not only in ginger, but also in chili and garlic. So, at the first signs of sluggishness and fatigue, you shouldn't skimp on them!

So it finally got you?

Even if it sounds like a myth, or at least like old wives' tales: A cold comes for three days, stays for three days, and goes away in three days. During this time, you should get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids. Above all, don't let anything or anyone stress you out. When you're lying on the couch or in bed, work should be somewhere else entirely. Your body needs plenty of rest right now, and you should give it that rest. And your colleagues will surely be deeply grateful if you don't bring the virus into the office.
Now you have the chance to finally binge-watch all those series that have been on your list forever and distract you from your sore throat and body aches. Our team and I asked around and had some serious discussions about which series and movies are essential. So here's a small but excellent selection from MEuK for you:

Something new...

If you're into fictional crime series, then "You" is the perfect show for you. This Netflix hit, starring Penn Badgley, has three seasons with ten episodes each. So, binge-watching a season a day on the couch is definitely doable, right?
Opinions are divided on "Squid Game" —some find it too brutal, others too trashy. The fact remains, however, that the South Korean series has generated enormous hype on social media platforms. With only nine episodes per season, the series is definitely a suitable form of entertainment for a relaxing day on the sofa.

...and something old

A near-modern classic is the series "Sherlock" starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. As Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, they solve the reimagined cases of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Each episode lasts around 90 minutes – there are 14 in total: "The game is on."
Laughter is known to be good medicine, so we've picked out a few episodes from well-known sitcoms that feature nasty colds:
  • New Girl
  • How I Met Your Mother
  • The Big Bang Theory

And what would a day in front of the TV be without snacks ?

A noodle soup like this one made with Alvito's vegetable broth. That's probably the healthiest and most sensible option. But if you're already sick, then you should eat what you're craving. How about nachos made from rescued ingredients ? Or would you prefer something sweet? Then Lini's Bites bars might be just the thing for you!
Stay safe and healthy during the cold season, take care of yourselves & make sure you take some time out! ❤️
