Appreciating who makes our products and supporting a disadvantaged segment of society – the social startup Nata Y Limón from Munich and Berlin is dedicated to precisely these issues.

Creating something beautiful that benefits everyone (Naty Y Limón website).

The origin story of the social startup

The two founders, Marlene and Anne, met while studying tourism. After spending several years in different jobs, they both independently decided to move to Central America to work on social projects in Guatemala and Costa Rica. It was during this time that the idea for "Nata Y Limón" was born and captivated both Marlene and Anne. In October 2016, after another stay in Guatemala, they decided to turn their idea into a real business. Nata Y Limón was born.

"More than a pillow" - The social impact

But why did the women choose Guatemala in particular? As Marlene told me in our interview, it is primarily the indigenous women in rural areas who have mastered weaving techniques and have been taught them since childhood. But therein lies the problem. This very social class is often socially disadvantaged. To improve the women's situation in the long term, Marlene and Anne want to offer them the opportunity to make weaving a secure source of income, enabling them to live more independently. For these women, weaving is often the only way to contribute to the family income.

Handmade in Guatemala

Marlene and Anne consider it extremely important that all fabrics and products are woven and processed entirely in Guatemala. Currently, the two women from Munich and Berlin are working with three cooperatives in Guatemala. Mutual respect and equality are of paramount importance to them.

The next step: A crowdfunding campaign

To offer weavers in Guatemala a long-term perspective, Marlene and Anne launched a crowdfunding campaign in September. The two had planned the campaign meticulously and for a long time, and they were not disappointed. They received a great deal of support and were able to raise more than €20,000. This not only secures the jobs of the people in Guatemala but also reaffirmed to the women that they are on the right track with their idea.
You can find more information about these two powerful women on their website and social media channels ( Facebook and Instagram ).
